An idle lunch time surf took me to an HMRC document which itemised no fewer than 21 Taxes that made up the £437 BILLION collected by the UK Government in the 2011-12 fiscal year.

George Harrison once sang in his second best song (Taxman*) “If you get too cold I’ll tax the heat” and this happened with the introduction of the Climate Change Levy in 2001. The next line is “If you take a walk, I’ll tax your feet”, but we’re not predicting that Mr Osborne will introduce the Shoe Leather Tax in the 20th March Budget.
For those keen on lists, the 21 taxes are
- Income Tax
- Capital Gains Tax
- National Insurance
- VAT
- Corporation Tax
- Bank payroll Tax
- Petroleum Revenue Tax
- Fuel Duties
- Inheritance Tax
- Stamp Duty
- Tobacco Duties
- Spirits Duties
- Beer Duties
- Wines Duties
- Cider Duties
- Betting & Gaming Duties

- Insurance Premium Tax
- Landfill Tax

- Aggregates Tax
How many have you paid (directly or indirectly) over the last year? I counted 14.
For those with time on their hands, the full list of income raised by each tax is here.
