We’re also investing in our people, fleet and systems to ensure we can continue delivering safely and efficiently as the business grows.
No two days are ever the same, which is one of the things I enjoy most. My day usually starts early checking in with our site teams before moving between client meetings, site visits, surveys and pricing work. I also spend a lot of time building customer relationships, developing the business, supporting the team and looking at ways we can continually improve our service.
The opportunity to build something you’re proud of. I enjoy creating opportunities for our team, developing long term relationships with clients and seeing the business continue to grow. It’s rewarding knowing that the effort you put in directly shapes the future of the company.
Without doubt, the achievement I’m most proud of is the people we’ve helped develop. The business has grown, but what gives me the greatest satisfaction is seeing members of the team build careers through Tubetec. We’ve invested heavily in developing our people, from scaffolding qualifications to HGV and forklift licences, and watching them gain new skills, take on more responsibility and progress in their careers is something I’m incredibly proud of.
From a project perspective, it was also a proud milestone to deliver our first large temporary roof. Providing that type of complex scaffold had always been an ambition of mine, and successfully completing it has given us the confidence to continue growing that side of the business.
My grandfather owned a scaffolding business, and working alongside him is where my interest in the industry first began. It gave me a real appreciation for the trade and inspired the passion I still have today.
When I started Tubetec, my goal was to build a scaffolding company that clients could genuinely rely on, one that delivers high standards of safety, quality and communication on every project. That vision is still what drives the business today.
People management has probably been the biggest learning curve. Every member of the team is different and bringing out the best in people isn’t always straightforward. Learning how to lead effectively while maintaining high standards has been one of the most valuable parts of the journey.
Most of my spare time is spent with my wife, our two young daughters and our dog. Family time is really important to me, whether that’s getting outdoors, exploring somewhere new or simply making the most of time together.
When I do get the chance, I enjoy skiing, playing golf and being outdoors whenever I can. More recently, I’ve signed up for the Edinburgh 10K and have started training towards my first race. It’s been a great reminder that consistency and small improvements over time often lead to the biggest results, a lesson that’s just as relevant in business as it is in running.
We’ve only been with One Accounting since earlier this year, but the difference has been noticeable from day one. They’re incredibly approachable, always happy to answer questions and genuinely take the time to understand our business and where we want to take it.
The advice they’ve provided has already had a positive impact, but what stands out most is that we feel valued as people rather than just another client. Having that level of support and trust gives us real confidence as we continue to grow.
My biggest tip would be to find someone who can hold you accountable. As a sole director, it’s very easy to become consumed by the day to day running of the business and lose sight of your longer term goals.
Working with a business coach over the past year has made a huge difference for me. Catching up every couple of weeks gives me dedicated time to step back from the day to day, review progress and make sure I’m taking action towards the goals I’ve set. That accountability has been invaluable.
Early on, I thought that delivering a great service would speak for itself. While reputation is incredibly important, I soon realised that people first need to know who you are and what you stand for. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt is that you have to communicate the value of your business just as well as you deliver it. Investing in your brand and marketing has been just as important as investing in the quality of our work.
